ICT Integration Model – SAMR Model

 SAMR Model

SAMR model is an abbreviation for Substitution, Augmentation, Modification, and Redefinition. This model is used to guide educators on how to effectively integrate technology into teaching and learning practices.

SAMR stands for:

  • Substitution: Technology is used as a direct substitute for a traditional tool without significant change.
  • Augmentation: Technology provides an improvement over traditional methods, enhancing learning tasks.
  • Modification: Technology allows for significant task redesign, fostering new opportunities for learning.
  • Redefinition: Technology enables the creation of new tasks that were previously inconceivable.

The purpose of the SAMR model is to help educators move beyond simply using technology for the sake of using it but to transform and enhance the learning experience. By progressing through the SAMR levels, teachers can leverage technology to engage students in more meaningful and impactful ways, ultimately improving learning outcomes.

Advantages of SAMR Model

  1. Encourages Higher-Level Thinking: Moving up the SAMR ladder encourages critical thinking, collaboration, and creativity among students.
  2. Enhances Student Engagement: Utilizing technology in transformative ways can increase student engagement and motivation in the learning process.
  3. Personalized Learning: Technology integration at the Modification and Redefinition levels allows for more personalized and differentiated instruction to meet the diverse needs of learners.
  4. Prepares Students for the Future: By incorporating technology effectively through SAMR, students develop essential digital literacy skills necessary for success in the 21st century.
  5. Innovative Teaching Practices: Teachers can explore innovative teaching methods and resources that go beyond traditional approaches, leading to dynamic and effective instruction.

Incorporating the SAMR model into lesson planning can empower educators to make purposeful decisions about technology integration, ultimately transforming the learning experience for students and preparing them for a digital world.

Lesson plan with implementation of the SAMR Model

Lesson No.: 1

Teacher’s Name: Dechen Namgay                                                Class: IV

Subject: Social Studies                                                                Time: 45 Minutes

Topic: Seasons

Teaching Learning Materials: Power Point, Laptop, Mobile phones/Computers, YouTube, MentiMeter, AutoDraw.

ICT Model: SAMR Model

Previous knowledge: Students already have the knowledge of seasons and how they change throughout the year.

Lesson objectives: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to;

  1. Identify and describe the characteristics of each of the four seasons after the lesson;

  2. Understand the reasons behind seasonal changes;

  3. Compare and contrast weather, activities, and natural phenomenon associated with the season accurately.

Lesson Introduction (5 Minutes)

The teacher will ask the students to think about what they know about seasons. After thinking time, the teacher will let the students brainstorm their ideas in their groups and then let each group share what they have discussed.

Lesson Development (35 minutes)

Information Input

The teacher will show pictures of the seasons in the powerpoint and ask the learners to describe what they see in each slide. Have the learners brainstorm and list activities, weather patterns and natural phenomena associated with each season.

Activity 1 (15 minutes)

The teacher will play a video of what causes seasons.

The teacher will let the learners discuss in pairs  on why seasons change and the role of Earth’s tilt and orbit in causing these changes. Then the pair will share their answers to their group members and decide on a finalized answer to write in the mentimeter slide.

The teacher will display the link to the mentimeter and let the students write their group answers on the word cloud displayed in the projector screen and discuss further on the answers with the whole class.

Activity 2 (20minutes)

The teacher let the students draw their favorite season by using AutoDraw.

Link to AutoDraw

The students will be given the freedom to explore and learn about the drawing tool with a little guidance from the teacher. After they are done drawing, the students will be instructed on how to save the image.

Follow up activities

The students will insert the image in the word document and they will have to write a short description below the drawing. Their works will be sent to the teacher by email.

Lesson Closure (5 minutes)

The teacher will wrap up the lesson by displaying some of the drawings and let everyone guess and describe their peer’s favorite season.
